Character Stuffing
Character personality: Despite his irreverent nature, Gabriel is hardly the clown that most of the pagan gods take him for. He takes little seriously, and is more prone to make an appropriate pop culture reference or wisecrack at someone’s expense than answer any question directly put to him. It’s easier to be flip.
Gabriel also cares. Deeply. And he wishes like hell he didn’t, because it would be so much easier. He loves his family with all the blazing power of an Archangel of God. He also hates them for tearing Creation apart with their petty jealousy and bickering. Gabriel cares for the humans, for his Father’s creation. The longer he spends down there, the more he realizes how truly special it is. Which is why it was so painful for him to watch his brothers fight, and to watch the Apocalypse begin, signaling the end of everything.
The Winchesters impress Gabriel on more than one occasion. Their sheer determination to set Creation on its ear just because they refuse to play their part, and their desire to rescue innocents for the Elysian Fields motel kitchen when they had the opportunity to make a clean, quiet getaway, spoke volumes to the archangel. It was the startling brightness of their souls, and the sheer human nerve to say ‘screw you’ to destiny that finally won Gabriel back into the fight on the side of humanity.
Brief character history: (sorry, not really brief, is it?)
The archangel Gabriel is one of four of the highest order of angels created by God. He was sent regularly to Earth as an emissary of God to speak to the humans. As a result, Gabriel developed an early affinity for his Father’s favored children. While they are deeply flawed, he also finds them endlessly fascinating. Each trip to Earth gets drawn out a little longer the more he visits.
It’s not only his developing interest and affection for humans that keep him away from Heaven for longer stretches at a time. The conspicuous absence of his Father, and the fighting between his two elder brothers, Lucifer and Michael, tears Gabriel apart on a level that he can’t even form into words. He loves his brothers, fiercely and deeply. So much so that he finds himself unable to take sides. Instead of watching his family rip itself apart and sink deeper into hatred and betrayal, he left before is own love for them was twisted into the same desperate hate.
When Gabriel returned to Earth, he did so discreetly. He was leaving home with no intention of ever coming back, and more to the point, to never be found. In order to keep his aura concealed from his Celestial kin, the first thing he did was trick the demigod Trickster out of his own body and took it as his own vessel. The residual power was enough to make sure that he would be mistaken for the pagan demigod rather than an archangel who had abandoned home.
For the next few millennia, he adopted the role of Trickster with relish. He dealt out his own form of slanted justice, peppered with enough pop culture references to keep him amused. It wasn’t until the Winchesters stumbled into his path that things really started to get interesting.
The first time he met them, he just had a little fun. They didn’t know who he really was, and he let them get away thinking they had killed him. Easy peasy, everyone went home happy.
The next time, he had felt compelled to interfere directly in their lives, trapping Sam and Dean Winchester in the Mystery Spot. For nearly a year, Gabriel tried to work his message through Sam’s impossibly thick skull. Family was their biggest Achilles heel. It always got them into trouble, and one day, was going to get them killed. It was his slightly misguided way of trying to help the brothers. He didn’t even know why, but he was starting to like them and had hoped (in vain, naturally) that his lesson would sink in.
Once the Apocalypse started, Gabriel was ready to throw in the towel. The archangel was bitterly tired of the millennia of fighting between his brothers. He still loved them desperately, but he also hated them for being so inflexible and rigid. If they could have forgiven, changed like the mortals did, then maybe things would have been all right. But no. They had to stick to their roles and end the world, even if their Father wasn’t around to care anymore and frankly, he had had enough.
So again, he cornered the Winchesters and tried to force them to accept their roles in the final battle, Sam as Lucifer’s vessel and Dean as Michael’s. He maintained strongly that he wasn’t on either side, that of Heaven or Hell. All he wanted was his family to stop fighting.
It wasn’t until Dean called him out as too afraid to stand up to his own family, and the events at the Elysian Fields Motel, that Gabriel finally decided he couldn’t sit on the sidelines forever. Dean and Sam Winchester were surprisingly good examples of what happened when his Father’s children did things right, and even when they screwed up (and boy weren’t they good at that), they still tried. The two brothers looked destiny, Heaven and Hell in the face and gave them all the finger.
Gabriel really liked that audacity.
At the end, he stood up to his brother Lucifer, buying Sam and Dean enough time to escape. Sure, it could have been an epic battle between the two archangels, but in the end, Gabriel allowed himself to die. Far easier to let his brother kill him and let the Winchesters escape than risk tearing a chunk of the planet out if they were to throw down.
Character's appearance: He’s fairly average looking, but that doesn’t mean that he’s helpless.
What sort of extra powers/abilities does your character have, if any?
-Flight, which to ordinary mortal eyes can appear as a sort of instantaneous teleportation
-Telekenisis, pyrokenisis
-He can create illusions and manipulate time. The illusions he creates in Enigma will be low level, and he won’t manipulate time to the degree as he does in canon.
-Angelic combat. He was one of the four principal archangels of God, which means that when it comes to a fight, he can more than handle himself. Even if he’d really, really rather not.
Samples:
[The communicator flips on, and he looks down at the camera, his expression one of deep amusement.]
Really? Don’t you think someone has been watching one too many episodes of Big Brother?
[exaggerated sigh and a snap of the fingers to manifest up a candy bar]
All right, all right. Fine. I’ll play along. It beats being dead anyway.
[Gabriel turns as he hears a small pack of dogs charging at him. He gives an amused snort and snaps his fingers. Three of the five turn into yapping poodles. The other two? Aw damn. He fishes out his sword and sighs.] Fine. Guess we'll do it the old fashioned way.
Third Person:
It’s a curious thing for an archangel to die. The explosion of power was enough to knock out three orbiting satellites, phone and cable reception for miles. But there was a reality TV show marathon on, so he was okay with that little side effect. Still. Helluva a way to go out. Skewered on his damned sword. The indignity of it.
Gabriel didn’t have any regrets though. Not at the end. Over the millennia he had developed an affection for humans that probably rivaled his Dad’s. They were amusing, impressive, petty, stubborn and sometimes just plain lucky. All of these traits were summed up in the Winchester brothers, who, despite as much as he harassed them, Gabriel actually liked.
Someone had to stand up for Creation, for Dad’s favorites in the final Big Battle. Like the brothers, he didn’t pick option A or B. He chose option #42b, thank you very much. Not for Heaven, and not for Hell. For the guys in the middle. Free will was pretty amazing sometimes, even if it got you smeared in pretty short order.
