"Well. I think we're all screwed up, just in a different way." John had never really gotten over Mary's death. But he'd left Sam and Dean with Ellen and Bobby while he went off to find himself. It had taken time for him to settle and come home, though Sam didn't really remember them. He'd been a decent enough father, even if he and Sam occasionally butted heads. That was to be expected with Alphas, though.
